Casey Stoner has confirmed that he will not cut his season short in order to have his fractured scaphoid in his right wrist operated on. A few weeks back there was speculation that Stoner would be unable to finish the season due to his injury, and after his domination of the Phillip Island MotoGP practically securing his second place position in the Championship it was thought that he may draw a line under his 2008 season.
Casey has stated that he will postpone the operation until after the final round in Valencia so the Ducati team can get some testing done on the GP9.
When speaking to the official MotoGP website about the Valencia test, Stoner said it’s “…the only reason that we are continuing with the season. We need to test that bike again, because there is going to be a three-month period in which I can’t test, and the technicians will need as much information as they can get. If I’m going to ride after the race at Valencia then I may as well take part in these last two races. If it gets impossible to ride then we’ll stop and get the operation, but right now it looks like we can finish the season.
And on the fight for second place, Stoner said:
“We’ve got two races to go, and things need to go right for us to confirm second place in the world championship, I’ve been thinking a lot lately, and to have second place by your name in this championship is something to look back and be proud of when you’ve retired. We’re making the best of my career, and I think that we can be back fighting for the title next year.”
Stoner has a 36 point lead on third placed Dani Pedrosa, with only two races left until the conclusion of the season
