More from the Classic Clips archive – this time it’s the Philip Island 500cc Grand Prix from 1990.

This was the final round of the 1990 season and took place on September 16th. 1990 was the 500cc season that marked the emergence of Wayne Rainey as the dominant force on his Marlboro Yamaha, and he went on to take the 500cc World Championship.

Despite Rainey’s consistent form, he had tough competition throughout the season as can be seen in the Philip Island race - Wayne Gardner took a hard forght win in a race that saw him almost highside himself out of contention, he also struggled with a damaged fairing before battling it out with Doohan in a close race finish.
