Stoner dominated the bulk of the session but both Fiat Yamaha riders managed to eventually find more speed with Lorenzo leading the time sheets in the closing laps. On his final lap, Rossi managed to put himself on top as the only rider to lap under 1minute and 22s.
Surprise of the day was Toni Elias coming in 5th, close behind Dani Pedrosa and in front of Andrea Dovizioso.
Both Hayden and Stoner suffered issues: Hayden complained of struggling with acceleration and only managed 14th position on the time sheets, and Casey Stoner suffered from the same illness that hit him at the last two races and was experiencing stomach cramps by the end of the session. He was reported saying:
“The feeling of tiredness and sickness has started earlier than it did in those two race weekends so it’s not looking good but again we have found a good set-up with the bike, we know we have something competitive and I just wish I was able to use it more.”
