A late surging lap saw Casey Stoner secure pole position from Valentino Rossi for the Australian MotoGP. Stoner had been dominant for the bulk of the qualifying session until Rossi took pole in the later half of the session. Stoner responded shortly afterwards and claimed the top spot back.
Dani Pedrosa suffered a high speed crash halfway through the qualifying session. but was able to rejoin the and claim 3rd position.
Jorge Lorenzo continued to find an optimal set-up and closed the session in 4th place – the first time this year that he has failed to qualify on the front row.
Niccolo Canepa did not take part due to the injuries that he sustained in yesterday’s crash and will not be racing on Sunday.
