Another Casey Stoner MotoGP victory isn’t really much of a surprise, but the manner by which this one came about was.

From the start, Stoner marched off into the distance away from the rest of the riders, but the real action was happenning behind him – a crash on the straight immediately after the start saw Alvaro Bautista take out Valentino Rossi, Nicky Hayden, and Randy De Puniet before the riders had even got round the first turn.

After the chaos had settled, the main action came from Dani Pedrosa and Andrea Dovizioso who were both fighting for second place in the race, and third in the Championship standings. Ben Spies soon caught up and joined the battle.

When the rain came in the closing laps, Spies managed to take on both Pedrosa and Dovizioso, and then started closing down Casey Stoner. A brave charge in wet conditions saw Spies take the lead from Stoner with two laps to go.

Spies maintained his lead, with Stoner following hotly behind, but the Yamaha rider seemed to have done enough to secure the win as he came round the final turn onto the home straight. However, Stoner got a better run out of the corner and with a little bit of extra Honda grunt, he managed to draw level with Spies, before crossing the line only 0.015 seconds ahead of him.

Andrea Dovizioso claimed third in the race, giving him third place in the Championship standing. Cal Crutchlow took fourth position after a long battle with Karel Abraham, securing his best MotoGP finish and the Rookie of the Year title.

Álvaro Bautista:
“Today has been a good day for us because we have had a full wet session to get some practice in those conditions. In this morning’s session I had a good feeling at the start, but as the track became drier it wasn’t as good and I couldn’t ride at the limit. The bike moved a lot and was spinning-up all over the track, so it was very difficult. In the second session, after the heavy rain, the track was much wetter and the conditions were a lot worse than this morning for all the riders, so it was essential that you rode smoothly and carefully. We changed some settings in the bike to help me get a confident feeling in the GSV-R and at the end of the session I was able to find a good rhythm. We finished first today and although it’s only the second free practice, you cannot improve as much in the wet as you can in the dry, so this is very good for us. I hope that tomorrow we can make some improvements in drying conditions like we had earlier today, but if it is totally dry we still have plenty of work to do to get ready. I am happy with the first day and looking forward to the rest of the weekend.”

Casey Stoner took victory at his home MotoGP to claim the 2011 MotoGP World Championship.

It was a strange race from the start, as both factory Yamaha riders were unable to take part – Ben Spies was suffering from his high-speed crash from yesterday, and Jorge Lorenzo, the only rider that could still challenge Stoner on points, was declared unfit to ride after injuring his finger in the warm up sessions.

With Lorenzo out of the race, Bautista found himself promoted to the front row of the grid.

Jorge Lorenzo’s absence in the race meant the pressure was off Stoner, however the Australian clearly had no plans to take things easy and collect points – by the 4th lap Stoner had powered off for the rest of the riders and had a 4 second lead. Stoner remained untouchable at the front and his lead remained unchallenged.

A shower of rain towards the end of the race caused issues for many riders. Nicky Hayden was the first to enter the pits and switch bikes, but the wet conditions caught out Cal Crutchlow, Alvaro Bautista, Hiroshi Aoyama, and Karel Abraham, who all crashed out.

The only real surprise in Casey Stoner taking pole position for the Australian MotoGP was the fact that he left it until the second half of the session to secure it.

Stoner looked slightly unsettled for the first half of the qualifying session and at one point even looked like he would have to fight to stay in the top 3. With less than 20 minutes to go, Stoner found his rhythm and locked in a number of fast laps to claim pole position, his 11th pole of the season so far.

Jorge Lorenzo will try to make sure that the race tomorrow is anything but a given for Stoner, as he qualified in 2nd position, 0.473 seconds behind the Australian.

The shock of the day came in the form of Alvaro Bautista, who pulled out a stunning late lap (with the help of slipstreaming Andrea Dovizioso) to put his Rizla Suzuki in 3rd position. He eventually lost out when Marco Simoncelli pushed him off the front row, but his lap was strong enough to ensure that he stayed in 4th place – this is Bautista’s best MotoGP qualifying position to date.

The MotoGP qualifying session at Motegi followed an all too familiar pattern as Casey Stoner took pole position. This is Stoner’s 10th pole position of 2011 (and his 4th pole position in a row).

The battle for pole seemed to be a 3-way dogfight between Pedrosa, Stoner, and Lorenzo. Pedrosa was the rider that looked strongest early in the session as he sat on provisional pole when he dipped below the 1 minute 46 second time-mark.

With only minutes to go, Lorenzo pulled out a flying lap that saw him take provisional pole away from Pedrosa. Stoner then responded and produced an incredible 1 minute 45 second lap to take pole position (and breaking the lap record in the process).

Andrea Dovizioso also caused upset by pushing Pedrosa down a further spot to take 3rd place. Pedrosa finished in 4th, and Ben Spies, who was still recovering from food poisioning, managed to haul himself up to 5th,

Repsol Honda dominated the first two Free Practice sessions in Japan as MotoGP hits Motegi.

Casey Stoner took the first free practice session with relative ease, and was hotly followed by Andrea Dovizioso. Surprise of the session came in the form of Nicky Hayden who stormed to 3rd position with only a minute left in the session.

The second session saw Dani Pedrosa assert his dominance, and Pedrosa was the first rider to break into the 1 minute 46 second mark. Only his Repsol team-mates could eventually set similar times.

There are 19 riders racing this weekend, with Damian Cudlin standing in for the injured Loris Capirossi in the Pramac Ducati team, and Honda are also fielding a couple of Japanese wildcards.
