Marco Melandri tests the Yamaha R1 [Video]

Marco Melandri managed to get his first experience on the Yamaha R1 superbike at the test session being conducted at Phillip Island with his WSBK team-mate for next season, Eugene Laverty.

The video below shows Marco Melandri putting the Yamaha R1 through its paces, and also includes an interview with Melandri who gives his thoughts on his switch to WSBK after his first day of testing.

Carlos Checa stormed to a double victory at Imola this weekend in the World Superbike race, but it was another ex-MotoGP rider, Max Biaggi, that shared the headlines by scoring enough points to claim his first WSBK Championship.

Ducati SBK – 46 reasons for the pull out

Not all Ducati fans are happy about the news of Valentino Rossi signing to race for Ducati in 2011 in MotoGP.

It seems that some Ducati fans are placing the blame for Ducati withdrawing from World Superbikes firmly at the feet of Gabriele Del Torchio (Ducati’s CEO) and Valentino Rossi.

The banner in the picture above (click to enlarge) was displayed at the WSBK Imola race this weekend and roughly translated states “Ducati SBK – 46 reasons for the pull out”

World Superbike 2010 Preview Video (and 2009 race highlights)

With the WSBK 2010 season starting at the end of this month in Australia, WSBK have put together a really interesting 2010 preview video that clocks in at about 25 minutes in length. You always get value for your money (or time) with World Superbikes.

This video gives you the low-down on all the riders (including recent additions from the MotoGP paddock Chris Vermeulen and James Toseland), all the teams and all the circuits that will feature in 2010.

As an extra bonus, this video also features a race by race review of the 2009 season that saw Ben Spies victorious in the series.

It’s well worth keeping an eye on the World Superbike youtube channel – all throughout 2009 they produced excellent 30 minute ‘magazine’ style video reviews of each race.

Bit late posting this – but interesting all the same.

James Toseland speake to MCN about his return to World Superbikes at the 2 day test at Portimao.

Toseland said:
“It’s been a busy old day. I was jet-lagging a bit before lunchtime but had a good meal, and a bit of a rest at lunchtime and got to grips with the track a bit. It’s probably one of the worst tracks you could try and learn on a brand new bike! In the first ten laps I could have done with a motocross bike. It’s really enjoyable to ride once you get to know where you are on the track, with the blind corners that’s all. Once you know where you are it’s not too bad. The places where you need to know where you are going it’s fast, so to be safe around here and fast you need to know which position you need to be in on the track.”

Video: World Superbikes Crash at Nurburgring (John Hopkins)

Ben Spies took the championship lead from rival Haga in World Superbikes this weekend, but the event was equally spectacular for the crash that occured between Tamada, Hopkins and Parkes – which saw John Hopkins actually run over by another bike. Fortunatley Hopkins wasn’t too badly injured. Watch the video below.

John Hopkins to switch to World Superbikes?

MCN are reporting that John Hopkins could be about to announce a move to World Superbikes for 2009.

With it looking more and more unlikely that the Kawasaki MotoGP team will find a rescue package fro 2009, Hopkins is rumoured to be considering a move to the Stiggy Honda Motorsports team to partner up with Leon Haslam. Haslam’s team-mate Roberto Rolfo is currently out of action with a dislocated shoulder, so if Hopkins took the seat it could probably be a cost effective option for the team as his wages would be largely covered by the sponsorship that he would bring.
