Jorge Lorenzo pulled out one of the best performances of his MotoGP career to take victory away from Casey Stoner at Mugello.
Stoner had dominated the race from the off – and had pulled out a 1 second lead by the end of lap one. Stoner managed to stretch his lead to 3 seconds by the mid-point of the race and looked assured of victory.
In the final third of the race, Lorenzo had managed to get ahead of Andrea Dovizioso and started to reel Casey Stoner in. As Stoner’s speed dropped, Lorenzo got faster and managed to take the lead at Savelli with only 6 laps to go.
Stoner’s problems got worse as he lost out to Andrea Dovizioso in the battle for second.
After the race, Casey Stoner attributed his issues to a loss of pressure in the rear tyre that caused grip issues.
Home-hero, Valentino Rossi, had to fight hard for his 6th place finish, and Cal Crutchlow was forced to retire due to front-end issues.
