The Moto2 Qualifying session at Mugello also suffered from persistent wet conditions. Despite the damp and the cold conditions, it was the Italians Mattia Passini and Andrea Iannone who made early attempts for pole position.

With 16 minutes to go Bradley Smith took the lead, with wet weather specialist Ant West up in second place. West eventually slipped down a few spaces as Marc Marquez and Stefan Bardl found their rhythm and started fighting each other for second place.

With four minutes to go Marquez snatched pole, and was then challenged by Alex De Angelis who grabbed pole on his final lap. Marquez was not yet finished and managed to reclaim pole on his final lap.
