Rain played its part in the MotoGP qualifying session at Mugello, and the riders all chose to withdraw back to their garages by the mid-point of the session. The poor weather meant that final qualifying times were locked as they were at the mid-point of the session.

Stoner was the fastest at the midway point, with Spies in second and Simoncelli in third, and home-hero Valentino Rossi (who was sporting a new helmet design) sat in 12th position.

Rossi and Hayden ventured back out on the track with 8 minutes to go, but the rain stayed consistent and both were unable to improve their times. Crutchlow and Simoncelli also ventured for out for a couple of laps.
